The "Nanny Bones" Award

The Beatrice Jeffery Award is known as the "Nanny Bones Award" and provides loan entry level string instruments or a small contribution to tuition for pupils aged 7- 18.

This award cannot be used in conjunction with any other financial assistance eg Kent Music Bursary.

Background

Beatrice Lillian Jeffery was born in 1924 in Rusthall Kent. She was the eldest of 4 children. She learnt to play piano as a child but left school at age 14 and went to work at Brown Knight and Truscall printers earning 7 shillings and 4 pence a week!

Sadly this also ended her musical education.

After a car crash damaged her knee her grandchildren would ask "Whats wrong with your leg nanny?" Her reply would always be "Oh theres a bone in it" and so she became affectionately known to everyone as Nanny Bones.

After she died in 2011 a box of piano music was found in her attic with some music dating back to 1926 and earlier.

Some of this music is still being used with Owl music piano students today!

The Nanny Bones award supports pupils in starting their musical education.
